On the 19th January 2002, Tim McGill, one of the founder members of the Dublin Chapter, took his leave. As the large congregation at his funeral testifies he will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
I first met Tim at a craft fair and mentioned how I would love to be able to turn pieces like his. Characteristically he immediately offered to help and invited me to visit his home and workshop. Unfortunately it was only 4 years ago that I took him up on this kind offer. But from that first visit he was most encouraging and became my good friend and mentor. A gifted craftsman who loved a challenge he contributed many fine pieces to competitions and always got a kick out of winning. The success of many artists is their ability to see the finished article before it is begun and Tim could see potential in every branch. While always busy with his own work he never failed to give time to helping others and got pleasure in so doing. Both patient and meticulous he encouraged fellow members to achieve their full potential and his aim always was to help others derive the same pleasure and satisfaction he got from woodturning.
He may have departed our company now but he has left us with many beautiful pieces to enjoy and remember him by.
